Why I Switched to Homemade Dog Food

Since our puppy was 3 months we kept changing puppy food brands. One brand would give her runs, another gave her a bad rash. So many times I hear about different dog food brands that are being recalled because of dogs dying. That is very scary. When she was 6 months old she went away to puppy training for 6 weeks. She came back from training looking chunky and just overweight.

Thats when I decided to start making her homemade dog food. We eat gluten free food at home therefore, the homemade dog food was going to be gluten free too. There is no corn, wheat, soy or oats, many dogs have allergies to these ingredients. There is also no additives or preservatives. The store brand dog food has additives and preservatives that cause all kinds of side effects.

I also add a raw egg every other morning to her food alternating with either yogurt and fresh berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries).

Recently I bought an Instant Pot and it is really easy to make homemade dog food. If you do not have an Instant Pot don’t worry you can still make it using a large pot on the stove.

Here is an article from Dr. Becker of Three Major Reasons to Feed Your Pet Homemade Diet.

Here are my top 3 favorite dog food recipes:

Turkey, Rice & Veggies

Top 3 Homemade Dog Food Recipes

Recipe 1

1 1/2 lbs ground turkey

1 1/2 lbs of muscle meat (gizzards, chicken liver, chicken hearts)

2 cups of organic brown rice

1 cup of organic vegetables (broccoli, carrots, peppers, cauliflower)

1 apple sliced (pits & cork removed) or 1 cup of berries

I put all of the above ingredients in my 6 qt Instant Pot. except the apple or berries (they don’t need to be cooked). At them at the end when feeding your dog.

Turkey and muscle meat on the bottom, then rice and veggies on top. Then add 3 1/2 cups of water and on manual (high) set for 12 minutes. Once done, I let it natural release about 10 minutes then quick release.

Once cooled off I mix everything together and measure out the meals in ziplock bags to refrigerate and freeze. I also add berries and or raw egg when serving the food (see her breakfast in the picture below).

Recipe 2

3 lbs ground beef

2 sweet potatoes

1 cup of organic vegetables (carrots, green beens, spinach)

Put ground beef in the Instant Pot (you can use any method you like), use the saute button for 5-6 minutes until mostly brown. Add sweet potatoes and vegetables close the lid and secure the pressure valve and cook for 10 minutes on high pressure. Once done allow the pressure to release naturally. Let it cool off then divide according to your dogs portion.

Recipe 3

3 lbs of Sardines and Mackerel (in water not oil) (already cooked in can, drain the water out before adding)

2 cups of organic brown rice

1 cup of organic vegetables (broccoli, carrots, peppers, cauliflower)

Cook the rice first with the vegetables (manual (high) set for 12 minutes. You can do this in the Instant Pot as instructed in recipe 1 or as you like according to your rice instructions. Let it cool off, then add the fish (remove any bones) and mix all together. Divide as needed.
